Captain Vikram Batra, born on September 9, 1974, in Palampur, Himachal Pradesh, was an extraordinary Indian Army officer who displayed remarkable courage and selflessness during the Kargil War in 1999. His actions and ultimate sacrifice earned him the prestigious Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest military decoration.

Vikram Batra was commissioned into the 13th Battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles. During the Kargil conflict, he was given the task of recapturing the strategic peak Point 4875, which was held by Pakistani intruders. Codenamed “Operation Vijay,” this mission required immense bravery and determination.
On June 19, 1999, Vikram Batra led his team through treacherous terrain, overcoming challenging obstacles and enemy fire. They reached a position near Point 4875, where they encountered heavy resistance from the Pakistani forces. Despite the intense fighting, Vikram Batra fearlessly pressed on.
During the operation, Vikram Batra’s team came under heavy machine gun and artillery fire. In a daring move, he decided to climb the sheer rock face of the peak, scaling it with sheer determination and agility. In the process, he eliminated four enemy soldiers in close combat.
As his team approached the top, they faced fierce resistance from the enemy. In a moment of exceptional valor, Vikram Batra charged at the enemy, shouting his war cry “Jai Mata Di!” and engaged in hand-to-hand combat. Despite being injured in the process, he fought valiantly, inspiring his comrades and turning the tide of the battle.
With his exceptional leadership and unwavering courage, Vikram Batra successfully captured Point 4875. This victory was a significant turning point in the Kargil War, as it provided a strategic advantage to the Indian forces.
However, tragedy struck on July 7, 1999, during the final stages of the operation. While attempting to rescue one of his injured comrades, Vikram Batra was hit by enemy fire and martyred. His selfless act epitomized the true spirit of a soldier.
Vikram Batra’s exemplary bravery and sacrifice did not go unnoticed. He was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, making him one of the youngest recipients of this honor. His citation for the award reads, “For displaying the most conspicuous bravery and indomitable spirit, Captain Vikram Batra, 13 JAK Rifles, was awarded the Param Vir Chakra.”
